ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Bernalillo County Commission has approved a three-year partnership to support a community-led air quality monitoring effort in Albuquerque’s South Valley and Mountain View neighborhoods.
Commission Vice Chair Frank Baca, who represents District 2, announced a formal agreement backing the Air We Share Project, an initiative focused on building a hyperlocal network of air quality monitors to collect and share environmental data with the public.
As part of the effort, Baca has committed $129,678 in district-directed funding to help expand and sustain the project.
According to county officials, the funding will support the hiring of technical staff responsible for deploying and maintaining previously acquired air monitoring equipment. The project also plans to create a publicly accessible online dashboard where residents can view air quality data collected from monitoring sites throughout the community.
Additional funding will be used for calibration equipment, maintenance tools, and other operational needs associated with the monitoring network.
The Air We Share Project began under the Environmental Justice Leadership Team of Friends of Valle de Oro and has since transitioned to a collaborative leadership structure involving multiple organizations.
Current leadership includes the Los Jardines Institute, the Pueblo of Isleta Natural Resources Department, and the Air We Share Advisory Committee. The initiative also receives support from technical experts and researchers affiliated with local higher education institutions. Financial oversight and reporting are being managed by the Southwest Research and Information Center.
County officials say Bernalillo County first became involved with the project in late 2024.
The funding commitment represents the latest in a series of county efforts aimed at addressing environmental justice concerns and improving access to environmental information for residents living in the Mountain View and South Valley communities.
