ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A popular New Mexico hiking destination is earning national recognition just as spring hiking season begins.
La Luz Trail in the Sandia Mountains has been ranked the 10th best spring hike in the United States, according to a new study by PlayFame. The trail also placed eighth among hikes on the U.S. mainland.
The ranking was created by analyzing spring‑themed keywords in thousands of TripAdvisor trail reviews. That data was combined with average spring temperatures and precipitation levels to generate an overall score for each hike.
La Luz Trail received a spring hike score of 6.14 out of 10, helped by its average spring temperature of about 60 degrees and a low chance of precipitation. Reviewers also frequently highlighted scenic views, forest surroundings, and seasonal conditions.
The trail offers sweeping views of Albuquerque and is known for its elevation gain and varied terrain. Hawaii’s Diamond Head Trail ranked first overall, followed by Anhinga Trail in Florida and Hanging Lake Trail in Colorado.
PlayFame researchers say spring conditions play a key role in the rankings, making moderate temperatures and weather reliability key factors in determining the best hiking destinations nationwide.
