Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –The Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center has reported the death of an inmate while in custody. A corrections officer discovered Derrick Benavidez in medical distress before 5am on Monday. The officer immediately initiated a medical emergency response and with MDC personnel in coordination with UNM Hospital’s medical team administered life-saving measure. Despite the efforts Benavidez was pronounced deceased at 5:34am. BCSO and MDC Office of Professional Standards are investigating the death. The official cause and manner of death will be determined by the NM Office of the Medical Investigator.
