Deming, NM (KKOB) – An investigation underway by New Mexico State Police into an officer involved shooting involving the U.S Marshals in Deming as they tried to make arrests in a case involving fugitives wanted on child sex crimes.
On Thursday, deputy marshals made entry into a home in Deming based on nationwide arrest warrants for 44-year old Joseph McDowell and 42-year old Cassandra Sauber. Both were wanted on several charges including child molestation, child exploitation, and child pornography.
When deputies entered the home McDowell armed himself with a rifle. At least one deputy discharged his rifle at McDowell who then barricaded himself inside the home. After several attempts to have the couple surrender peacefully a drone and robot were sent inside the home and found the couple dead of an apparent murder-suicide.
State Police Investigations Bureau agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews
