Santa Fe, NM (KKOB)- A District Court Judge in Santa Fe has ordered Meta the parent company of Facebook and Instagram to pay $25 billion in fines and calling Facebook’s deception “was intentional and executives consistently misled users about how the platform worked.”
State District Court Judge Francis J. Mathew announced his ruling Wednesday after a jury in September had found the company was liable for deceiving users about their privacy on Facebook.
This is the biggest fine ever against the company.
NM Attorney General Raul Torrez said, “This judgment should be a signal, an unambiguous message, to Silicon Valley,” “The award will serve as a warning tontech companies that New Mexico will hold them accountable.”
“Facebook promised users that they (the users) controlled their data. This was false,” wrote Judge Mathew.
In a statement Meta’s Chief Legal Officer C.J Mahoney said, “At its core, this lawsuit seeks to impose a tax on speech to enforce new rules for what people can say online. We are confident we will prevail on appeal.”
