Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — School closures, repurposing buildings and boundary changes are all on the table, as New Mexico’s largest school district responds to a sharp decline in student enrollment. APS has reported losing approximately 20,000 students over the past decade, leaving many schools operating significantly below their intended capacities. Officials identified two primary reasons for the decline: falling birth rates in Bernalillo County and families with school-age children leaving New Mexico. APS will hold 14 public meetings during the next three months to gather feedback from students, families, employees, community organizations and the general public. Any proposal to close a school would require a separate recommendation and formal action by the APS Board of Education.
