ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico drivers are paying more at the pump this week, even as gasoline prices continue to trend downward nationwide.
According to AAA New Mexico’s Weekend Gas Watch, the statewide average for regular unleaded gasoline now stands at $4.48 per gallon, up seven cents from last week and $1.59 higher than a year ago.
Meanwhile, the national average has dropped to $4.36 per gallon, down five cents from the previous week as lower demand and declining oil prices continue to impact markets across much of the country.
Among New Mexico’s largest metro areas, prices vary widely, with drivers in Farmington paying the highest average price and Albuquerque motorists seeing the lowest.
New Mexico Gas Prices by City
| City | Average Price |
|---|---|
| Farmington | $4.76 |
| Santa Fe | $4.65 |
| Las Cruces | $4.60 |
| Gallup | $4.57 |
| Rio Rancho | $4.53 |
| Albuquerque | $4.51 |
| State Average | $4.48 |
| National Average | $4.36 |
AAA says that while New Mexico prices remain elevated, continued declines in oil prices and seasonal reductions in gasoline demand could eventually lead to lower prices across the state. Ways drivers can save at the pump:
- Compare prices before filling up using gas-price apps.
- Join fuel rewards or grocery store discount programs.
- Keep tires properly inflated to improve fuel efficiency.
- Avoid hard acceleration and excessive speeding.
- Combine errands to reduce fuel consumption.
- Remove unnecessary weight from vehicles.
Even small savings of a few cents per gallon can make a noticeable difference over the course of a month, especially for commuters and families with multiple vehicles.
