ZUNI, N.M. — Members of the Pueblo of Zuni will now have access to federal disaster assistance following severe storms and flooding that impacted the area earlier this summer.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that President Donald J. Trump has approved a Major Disaster Declaration for the Pueblo, covering damage caused by severe storms and flooding between July 16 and July 21, 2026.
The declaration makes federal funding available to eligible individuals and families affected by the disaster. Assistance may include grants for temporary housing, home repairs, and the replacement of personal property damaged by the storms.
In addition to assistance for residents, the declaration makes the Pueblo eligible for federal funding on a cost-sharing basis to support emergency response efforts and the repair or replacement of public facilities damaged during the flooding.
Georgeta Dragoiu has been appointed as the Federal Coordinating Officer to oversee federal recovery operations in the affected area.
FEMA says additional assistance designations could be approved in the future if further damage assessments warrant expanded aid.
Officials are encouraging tribal members who experienced losses to first contact their insurance providers before seeking federal assistance.
The declaration provides another step in the recovery process for the Pueblo of Zuni as residents and tribal leaders continue addressing damage left behind by summer flooding.
