Raton, NM (KKOB) – A debate over potential data centers is growing in northern New Mexico. According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, the City Commission voted 3-2 against an ordinance that would have put a one-year moratorium against data centers in Raton. During the meeting, a petition signed by almost 500 residents opposed to data centers in Colfax County was presented to commissioners.
In August, the County Commission had voted to adopt the moratorium in the unincorporated areas of the county. So far four counties in the state have voted for moratoriums including Santa Fe, Sierra and Socorro counties. Raton City Commissioner said during the vote against that the city lacks the electrical power and water necessary for a data center.
Earlier this year Raton signed a memo of understanding with a Denver based company to conduct a feasibility study for a data center project.
