ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Day five of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta brought a mix of colorful international launches and challenging weather conditions as balloonists from around the world gathered for the annual Flight of the Nations Mass Ascension.
The morning began with favorable flying conditions, allowing dozens of balloons to launch from Balloon Fiesta Park. Pilots representing 17 countries, along with the United States, took part in the event, showcasing the international participation that has become a hallmark of Balloon Fiesta.
As the launch progressed, however, conditions changed and officials made the uncommon decision to switch from a green flag to a yellow flag. The change halted additional launches and left some balloons grounded as winds became less favorable.
Despite the weather shift, spectators were still treated to a sky filled with balloons representing countries from nearly every continent, reinforcing Balloon Fiesta’s reputation as one of the world’s premier ballooning events.
Wednesday’s Flight of the Nations highlighted the global appeal of the festival, with pilots traveling thousands of miles to fly in Albuquerque and share their cultures with visitors from around the world.
Now, attention turns to Thursday’s Special Shape Rodeo, one of the most anticipated events of Fiesta week. Weather permitting, dozens of specialty balloons, including popular character balloons and unique creations, are expected to take flight over Balloon Fiesta Park.
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta continues through the weekend.
