Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –Kidnapping convictions were reversed by a federal appeals court in the case tied to a child’s death at a Taos County compound. The case dates back to 2017 when Siraj Wahhaj and four others were accused of taking Wahhaj’s 3 year old son from his mother in Georgia. Wahhaj’s son was brought to a remote compound in Taos. Prosecutors said the boy died during a religious ritual at the compound. The court overturned kidnapping convictions of five people in the group because Wahhaj had custody of his son at the time. The leader of the group, Jany Leveille took a plea deal and remains in a federal prison. Terrorism related charges and conspiracy to murder U.S. officers or employees were vacated against Wahhaj and another member of the group as they will face another trial.
