Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Two candidates are competing to become New Mexico’s next State Land Commissioner, an office responsible for managing roughly 9 million acres of state trust land and generating revenue for public schools and other institutions. Democrat Juan de Jesus Sanchez III and Republican Michael Perry both say they want to balance economic development with long-term land stewardship. The race comes as New Mexico faces growing interest in energy development, conservation projects, and other uses of state trust lands.
