ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque is preparing to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors as the 54th Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta gets underway Saturday, marking another milestone for one of New Mexico’s largest tourism events.
City leaders and Balloon Fiesta officials outlined preparations this week, highlighting infrastructure improvements, expanded public safety efforts, and special events planned throughout Albuquerque during the nine-day celebration.
This year also marks the 30th anniversary of Balloon Fiesta Park serving as the home of the internationally recognized event. Officials say recent investments are designed not only to support this year’s crowds but also to prepare the facility for future growth.
Among the upgrades completed ahead of Fiesta are new power and data connections along Vendor’s Row, storm drainage improvements, additional lighting, and expanded security camera coverage throughout Balloon Fiesta Park. Albuquerque’s Parks and Recreation Department has also added new turf-management equipment and implemented maintenance strategies intended to improve field conditions during major events.
City officials also announced the acquisition of a 6.29-acre property adjacent to Balloon Fiesta Park, a move they say will provide additional space and support future development around the venue.
Beyond Balloon Fiesta Park, visitors will find special programming across the city. The Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum will offer extended hours, while Historic Old Town will feature daily live music. Route 66 Centennial celebrations, concerts, and events are also planned throughout Balloon Fiesta week.
The Albuquerque International Sunport is already reporting a 10 percent increase in passenger traffic as visitors begin arriving for the event. The city is also bringing back its “Sunport Serenades” program to welcome travelers.
Public safety remains a major focus. The Albuquerque Police Department says additional officers will be assigned to Balloon Fiesta operations, while specialized units will conduct enforcement efforts targeting vehicle theft and property crimes. Officers will also increase patrols around hotels and lodging areas throughout the city.
Officials are once again encouraging visitors to use the Balloon Fiesta Park-and-Ride system, with pickup locations including Cottonwood Mall, Coronado Center, Hoffmantown Church, and Intel in Rio Rancho on weekends.
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta begins Saturday, October 3, and remains one of the largest ballooning events in the world, drawing visitors from across the country and around the globe to New Mexico each year.
