Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – New Mexico has become the 31st state in the country to be approved with its own meat and poultry inspection program and as of October 1st it is operational offering producers another opportunity for inspection. The process is supposed to confirm that the animals are safe for consumer consumption.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the New Mexico Livestock Board finalized the plan for a state-run meat and poultry inspection program, allowing local producers to sell meat and poultry products after they’ve been processed at facilities monitored by state instead of federal authorities.
Starting October 1, the State Meat & Poultry Inspection Program has officially entered into a cooperative agreement with USDA Food Safety Inspection Services (FSIS).
