ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Rio Metro and the Roadrunner Food Bank are teaming up this month to help stock local food shelves through the return of the annual “Stuff the Train” food drive.
The initiative, held during Hunger Action Month, encourages community members to donate non-perishable food items while receiving a free ride on the New Mexico Rail Runner Express.
The food drives will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 16 and Wednesday, Sept. 23 at the Montaño Rail Runner Station, located at 130 Montaño Road NW in Albuquerque. Donations will be accepted from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on both dates.
Anyone who donates non-perishable food items will receive a Rail Runner Day Pass, which can be used through Dec. 31, 2026.
Rio Metro Executive Director Robert Gonzales said the event is an opportunity for residents to support families facing food insecurity while taking direct action in their community.
According to organizers, food insecurity remains a significant issue across New Mexico, where many families continue to rely on food assistance programs and community food banks.
In addition to dropping off donations, attendees will have the opportunity to meet Trax, the Rail Runner mascot, and Roadie, the Roadrunner Food Bank mascot, during both events.
Roadrunner Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network, is New Mexico’s largest hunger-relief organization. The nonprofit distributes food through hundreds of partner agencies and community programs across the state.
Organizers say all donated food collected during the “Stuff the Train” campaign will help support hunger-relief efforts for New Mexicans in need.
