Santa Fe, NM (KKOB)- New Mexico’s Forward Party has filed an appeal in its case against the state’s minor party signature rules.
New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez is siding with the minor political party in its legal challenge against New Mexico’s ballot access laws and the New Mexico Secretary of State’s Office.
The Forward Party, a centrist third party founded by former 2020 presidential candidate Andrew Yang, filed a lawsuit against the Secretary of State’s Office in July after two of its statewide candidates were disqualified from the ballot for failing to obtain the signature requirement. Earlie this month, a U.S. District Court judge denied the Forward Party’s request to enjoin the ballot access requirements so the party has now filed an appeal with the Court of Appeals in Colorado.
AG Torrez then filed an amicus brief in the appeal last week in support of the Forward Party, arguing the state’s signature requirements for minor party and independent candidates are “plainly unconstitutional.”
