KIRTLAND, N.M. — A man was shot and killed during a deputy-involved shooting Monday night in Kirtland, according to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were dispatched to a reported domestic violence disturbance at the Dollar General store at approximately 8:37 p.m.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were speaking with the alleged victim when the suspect returned to the scene. Investigators say the man approached deputies while holding a knife above his head.
Authorities said deputies gave multiple commands for the man to stop and drop the knife. The sheriff’s office says the suspect ignored those commands and continued moving toward deputies.
A deputy then discharged his service weapon, striking the suspect.
The man died at the scene.
The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.
The investigation has been turned over to the Farmington Police Department, which is leading the inquiry into the incident.
