Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – New Mexico could gain a much bigger voice in the race for the White House under a proposal from a Democratic National Committee panel. The committee is recommending that New Mexico move into the early voting window for the 2028 Democratic presidential primary, making it the fourth state to vote on February 15, behind South Carolina, Nevada, and New Hampshire. Democratic Party leaders say the recommendation reflects New Mexico’s diverse electorate, including large Hispanic and Native American populations, and could bring more presidential candidates and national attention to the state during the primary season.
The proposed change is not yet final. The full Democratic National Committee is expected to vote on the recommendation on August 15, and New Mexico lawmakers would also need to approve changes to state law before the new primary date could take effect.
