Guadalupe County, NM (KKOB) – A 22-year old man is in custody at the Colfax County Detention Center after a weekend carjacking and highway shootout. Riel Gonzales and his 18-year old ex-girlfriend were involved in a dispute at a gas station in Guadalupe County around 11am Saturday. The woman then took off in a BMW and left Gonzales at the gas station. Police say he then stole a Dykon Blasting work truck from the gas station at gunpoint and chased the ex-girlfriend.
Once at a residence Gonzales left the work truck and took the BMW. Soon after the ex-girlfriend and her mother ran into Gonzales on the highway along with the mother’s boyfriend. Gunfire was exchanged between the two men and eventually police arrived and arrested Gonzales who received a gunshot wound in the arm in the shootout.
The ex-girlfriend also received a gunshot wound to the arm as well. Charges against Gonzales are still pending he’s in jail for now for probation violation.
