SANTA FE, N.M. — A 14-year-old Santa Fe teen has been taken into custody following a shooting that left another teenager hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to the Santa Fe Police Department, officers were dispatched to a local hospital around 10:08 p.m. on Sept. 17 after a 15-year-old male arrived with two gunshot wounds.
Investigators say witness interviews indicated there was no argument before the shooting and that the gun discharge appeared to be accidental.
During the investigation, officers contacted the suspect and observed signs of alcohol consumption. Police say the teen later submitted to a breath test that reportedly showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.10.
The injured teen was transported to an Albuquerque hospital for additional treatment. Authorities said the injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Police also noted that the victim had been treated for a separate firearm-related injury less than a month ago in an unrelated incident that occurred in Santa Fe County.
The Santa Fe Police Department’s Crime Scene Unit processed the scene and collected evidence as part of the investigation.
After coordinating with the Juvenile Probation Office and the Santa Fe District Attorney’s Office, authorities took the suspect into custody. The teen faces charges including:
- Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm
- Negligent Use of a Deadly Weapon
- Possession of Alcoholic Beverages by a Minor
The suspect is being held at the San Juan County Juvenile Detention Center.
Police say there are no outstanding suspects and no ongoing threat to the community. The investigation remains active.
