SANTA FE, N.M. — Seventeen animal shelters across New Mexico will receive nearly $2 million in state funding for facility improvements aimed at enhancing the care and sheltering of dogs and cats.
The funding is being distributed through the New Mexico Animal Welfare Program, administered by the state’s Department of Finance and Administration. The program provides ongoing support for projects that improve animal shelter facilities, safety, and operational capacity.
The grants will fund a variety of improvements, including kennel construction and expansion, HVAC upgrades, quarantine and isolation facilities, drainage improvements, surgical suite renovations, fencing, storage buildings, and other infrastructure projects.
Among the largest awards are:
- City of Bayard: $290,600 for kennel construction, HVAC upgrades, drainage improvements, and storage enhancements.
- City of Hobbs: $220,000 for drainage, ventilation, and noise-control improvements at the Animal Adoption Center.
- City of Carlsbad: $203,500 for lobby renovations, facility expansion, and a veterinary surgical area.
- City of Portales: $194,953 for a mobile kennel building.
- Town of Carrizozo: $184,000 for structural, HVAC, and outdoor facility improvements.
Other communities receiving funding include Aztec, Belen, Edgewood, Grants, the Pueblo of Isleta, Las Cruces, Logan, Moriarty, Santa Rosa, Sierra County, Socorro, and Torrance County.
State officials say the projects are designed to create safer, healthier environments for animals while improving shelter operations and increasing capacity to serve local communities.
The funding supports the state’s broader efforts to strengthen animal welfare services and improve shelter infrastructure throughout New Mexico.
