ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico has been awarded a $100,000 planning grant to develop a new statewide program focused on youth mental health and workforce development.
The grant, awarded by the Schultz Family Foundation and Pinterest, will support the design of a Youth Mental Health Corps through the state’s New MexiCorps program. Officials say the initiative will train young adults, ages 18 to 24, to serve as near-peer navigators in schools and community organizations.
The program is intended to address growing mental health needs while also creating a pathway into careers in behavioral health. Participants would gain training, certifications, and hands-on experience while supporting their communities.
During the planning phase, organizers will focus on building partnerships, conducting outreach, and developing training and certification pathways. Leaders say the program may also expand into community organizations that serve at-risk populations.
New Mexico is one of 11 states selected to receive the planning grant. If approved, the Youth Mental Health Corps is expected to launch in the 2027–2028 school year.
