ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A busy Memorial Day weekend is expected across New Mexico and the Southwest as millions of Americans prepare to travel.
According to AAA, about 45 million people nationwide are expected to travel at least 50 miles between May 21 and May 25—a new record. Of those, more than 39 million are expected to drive, which could lead to heavier traffic on major New Mexico highways like I-25 and I-40.
Travel experts say drivers in the region should also expect higher gas prices compared to last year, with current prices at their highest levels since 2022. That could impact travel budgets for some families, even as demand remains strong.
Peak congestion is expected in the afternoons leading into the holiday weekend, particularly between 3 and 6 p.m. on May 21 and 22, as well as later on May 25. Officials say Sunday is expected to see lighter traffic.
Air travel is also on the rise, with nearly 3.7 million people expected to fly. Flight prices are slightly lower than last year, which could benefit travelers departing from regional airports, including Albuquerque International Sunport.
AAA says destinations across the Southwest, including cities like Denver and Las Vegas, remain popular picks for travelers in the region.
Despite rising costs, officials say many families continue to prioritize travel as Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer.
