ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is releasing new information about a deadly domestic violence shooting early Tuesday at the Leisure Mountain RV Park in Tijeras.
Deputies were called around 1:18 a.m. to the park after a woman reported that a man was armed with a handgun. While deputies were on their way, dispatchers received multiple updates that gunshots had been fired inside the residence.
BCSO says deputies arrived within about seven minutes of the first 911 call. At the scene, they encountered a man who was taken into custody after deputies deployed a Taser. The suspect has been identified as 41‑year‑old Luis Sanchez.
Inside the residence, deputies found a 4‑year‑old boy who was pronounced dead. An adult woman—identified as an Assistant District Attorney with the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office—and a 1‑year‑old boy were rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Sanchez is expected to be booked on the following charges:
- Intentional Child Abuse Resulting in Death
- Child Abuse with Great Bodily Harm
- Aggravated Battery on a Household Member with Great Bodily Harm
- Tampering With Evidence
Investigators say Sanchez has no prior criminal history and that there have been no recent calls for service to the home or phone number within the past 12 months.
Sheriff John Allen called the crime scene “one of the most horrific” deputies may encounter, saying in a statement:
“Our hearts are with the victims and their loved ones. We are asking this community to keep the victims, their family, the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office, and every deputy, detective, 911 call taker, firefighter, and medical professional who responded and is still working this case in your prayers.”
The Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office also confirmed the victims include one of its staff members and her children, saying the tragedy has deeply affected the entire office.
BCSO says this remains an active and ongoing investigation, and more information will be released as appropriate.
