Albuquerque- A major construction project to replace the Rio Bravo bridge and widen the road from four to six lanes has begun. For the next three weeks a short portion of Rio Bravo has been reduced to one lane. The eastbound portion of Rio Bravo from its approach to Second Street, and just past that intersection, is reduced to one lane so that construction crews can remove and replace the concrete at the intersection.
The Rio Bravo and Second Street Intersection project is the latest phase in the reconstruction of Rio Bravo Boulevard by Bernalillo County.
The Bernalillo County project involves:
- Widening Rio Bravo Boulevard from four travel lanes to six travel lanes.
- Adding pedestrian facilities on the north side of the road.
- Adding Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant improvements to the southside trail.
- A rebuilt railroad crossing that accommodates the new roadway width.
The replacement of the Rio Bravo bridge is part of a project by the New Mexico Department of Transportation. The bridge will be replaced but the work will be done without closing the bridge as it is also expanded from four to six lanes.
The project is currently expected to be completed by May 2026.
