Las Cruces, NM (KKOB)- A father and son from Las Cruces are recovering from gunshot wounds and the alleged shooter is in custody in El Paso following a shooting at a Las Cruces intersection Sunday afternoon.
About 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Las Cruces police and fire were dispatched to the report of a shooting that injured a man and his son near the intersection of south Solano Drive and Missouri Avenue. Police were told that a man, driving a Dodge Durango, fired several rounds into a vehicle occupied by a 34-year-old man and his 11-year-old son. The father was struck by gunfire at least once and his 11-year-old son received shrapnel injuries to his face and arms both were taken to a local hospital. The victims say that the incident was unprovoked.
After the shooting the man identified as 26-year old Jesus Angel Cortez, had broken into his children’s mother’s home to focibly remove a child through the broken window. Cortez was arrested in El Paso where he is being held without bond pending his extradition back to New Mexico.
