ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Families with loved ones buried at Fairview Memorial Park are raising concerns after flooding reportedly damaged gravesites at the southeast Albuquerque cemetery.
Relatives say broken sprinklers ran for an extended period of time, causing water to pool in parts of the cemetery and leaving some gravestones sunken or shifted in the saturated ground.
Families visited the cemetery Sunday to inspect the damage and assess the condition of their loved ones’ final resting places. For some, the sight was difficult to see.
One mother, whose son is buried at Fairview Memorial Park, said the damage reopened painful emotions she thought had begun to heal.
“It’s very upsetting,” she said, describing the experience of finding her son’s gravesite affected by the flooding.
It’s not yet clear how many graves may have been impacted. Family members are now looking for answers about how the flooding happened and what steps will be taken to repair the damaged areas.
Fairview Memorial Park has not publicly commented on the reported damage.
