Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –The subject of ongoing debate, the Soldiers Memorial obelisk in Santa Fe, continues to stir up controversy. It was torn down by protesters in 2020 due to language offensive to Native Americans. After the obelisk was toppled, the city stored its remains. A local historical group later sued the city to restore the monument, and a judge ruled in their favor. However, Santa Fe Mayor Michael Garcia said the ruling presents challenges. He added that the judge’s order is basically rebuild it to 2020 status again, which given its condition, cannot be done because the obelisk is not structurally sound. Currently, the remains of the obelisk are on public display at the New Mexico History Museum, where visitors can view the fragments, and share ideas for its future on a designated wall.
