Las Cruces, NM (KKOB) – More than a year after a deadly road rage shooting in Las Cruces, the case has come to a close with a guilty plea. Nineteen-year-old Jonathan Estrada pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the June 2, 2025 shooting death of 14-year-old Alejandro Roman. Investigators say Roman was asleep in the back seat of a family vehicle when Estrada fired shots during a road rage confrontation. According to court documents, Estrada was sentenced to 23 years in prison, but five years were suspended, meaning he will serve just over 17 years behind bars. Following his release, Estrada will be required to serve two years of parole and five years of supervised probation.
The plea agreement brings an end to a case that drew significant attention in southern New Mexico.
