ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Thursday morning during the execution of a search warrant at a southeast Albuquerque residence.
According to New Mexico State Police, agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and task force officers from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) and Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) were serving a search warrant at a home in the 12700 block of Piru Boulevard SE at approximately 5 a.m. on July 23.
Investigators say law enforcement officers announced their presence and knocked before breaching the residence to execute the warrant.
As officers cleared the first floor of the home, authorities say a single gunshot was fired from the second floor.
According to State Police, two Bernalillo County deputies, one Sandoval County deputy, and two DEA agents returned fire toward the source of the gunshot.
The suspect, identified as Victor Pena, 56, later complied with officers’ commands and was taken into custody without further incident. Pena was transported to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Officials said no law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident.
The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is leading the investigation into the shooting.
State Police noted that they serve as factfinders in officer-involved shooting investigations, collecting evidence, documenting the scene, and conducting interviews before forwarding their findings to the appropriate district attorney for review.
Authorities said the names of the deputies and agents involved will not be released by New Mexico State Police. Questions regarding their administrative or duty status will be handled by their respective agencies.
