Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Crews broke ground on the $30 million redevelopment project to transform the San Mateo Towers on Central in January. The project is financed by the city, but private developer Metz Kelly, which is in charge of the job, say they have hit some snags along the way. Although the buildings have been vacant for about four years, they’ve been vandalized, fires have been started, and as many as 100 people were living inside at least one of the buildings. The systems were so badly destroyed, it necessitated an entirely new transformer pad. Crews have carried out 12 40-foot dumpsters full of debris. The entire project is actually 11 acres, and is set to be finished by September 2027.
