Santa Fe, NM (KKOB) – Following four of the New Mexico’s tribes suing the online prediction market platform “Kalshi” in May, state attorney general Raul Torrez has announced this week that the State will pursue it’s own suit as well. While sports betting is legal in New Mexico, it’s limited to in-person wagering at tribal casinos. The NMDOJ cited this framework as the basis for suing Kalshi, accusing the platform of trying to skirt state gaming laws and regulations.
The NMDOJ has accused Kalshi of using “event contracts” to effectively make online sports betting happen in the state. The suit also claims Kalshi operates with a minimum betting age of 18 years old, which is three years younger than the minimum age at the state’s tribal casinos.
