Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – The Albuquerque Public Schools Board has approved a budget of more than $2 billion for the 2027 fiscal year. Of that, just over $1 billion is allocated for operations, including funding for school safety initiatives and the APS Police Department. The plan also includes a 1% pay raise for employees and an increased district contribution toward health insurance costs, totaling about $6.2 million.
Despite the overall spending plan, APS is still facing a budget deficit of more than $16 million and will rely on reserve funds to cover the shortfall. District leaders say declining enrollment is a major factor, with more than 2,500 students lost over the past year, resulting in about $40 million less in state funding.
The budget also includes nearly $729 million for capital projects like construction and air conditioning upgrades. It now moves to the state for final approval.
