Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Bernalillo County Assessor Damian Lara, has filed an ethics complaint against the County Treasurer, Tim Eichenberg, accusing him of personally benefitting from changes he made to property tax assessments. The complaint stems from their debate regarding how short-term rentals should be classified. Lara argues that under state law, rentals need to be reclassified from residential to commercial. which resulted in more than 1,000 properties in Bernalillo County to be reclassified which resulted in an increase in property taxes for the owners.
Lara says that several owners protested and used a company called New Mexico Property Tax to help them and that Eichenberg is listed as one of the owners of the company. Eichenberg says that the company was sold in 2024
