SANTA FE, N.M. — A nonpartisan election monitoring group says New Mexico’s 2026 General Election was administered smoothly overall, despite isolated issues involving same-day voter registration systems.
Observe New Mexico Elections, known as ONME, deployed 260 trained and certified election observers across all 33 New Mexico counties to monitor voting activities before and during Election Day.
According to preliminary findings released Wednesday, observers reported strong voter participation statewide and generally smooth operations at polling locations. The organization said most challenges involved delays with same-day voter registration systems, which in some areas either slowed down or temporarily stopped working.
ONME said poll workers and election officials adapted to the issues throughout the day, with some counties reallocating staff and resources to help keep lines moving during periods of heavy turnout.
“Initial feedback from ONME observers shows that the General Election ran smoothly overall, with a handful of polling sites impacted by delays in the same-day voter registration system,” said Carmen López, co-leader of ONME.
The group monitored a range of election activities, including:
- Voting machine and equipment certification
- Poll worker training
- Early voting operations
- Absentee ballot processing
- Election Day voting procedures
This marks the fifth consecutive election observed by ONME.
The organization’s observers were certified through the New Mexico Secretary of State’s Office and collected data from polling locations throughout the state.
In addition to Election Day operations, ONME plans to monitor county canvassing and certification processes before issuing a final report summarizing its observations and findings.
The organization said a more detailed statewide assessment will be released after election certification is completed.
