Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Communities affected by radiation exposure from the Trinity nuclear test are continuing their decades-long push for recognition and compensation. This weekend, a new version of the documentary First We Bombed New Mexico premieres, featuring the recent expansion of federal compensation benefits for New Mexico downwinders. Advocates say more than 1,000 claims have already been paid, totaling roughly $100 million. Supporters are now pushing for additional changes that would expand eligibility and increase benefits for those impacted by radiation exposure.
