Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –It’s been almost two years but cattle from Chihuahua, Mexico is now allowed back in the Columbus Stockyards. The transition happened Monday after inspectors from the U.S. Department of Agriculture visited facilities on the Mexican side of the border. The Columbus site is the third southern border port to reopen as cattle imports with added protocols were implemented to slow the spread of the New World Screwworm parasite. The Columbus Stockyards have been closed since November of 2024 after a case of the fly-borne parasite was identified in southern Mexico. Before the closure the about a million head of cattle were imported from Mexico annually.
