SAN JUAN COUNTY, N.M. – Emergency officials have ordered evacuations for some residents in northwestern New Mexico as rising river levels increase flooding concerns across the region.
According to the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management, residents living along the Animas River and San Juan River have been urged to evacuate as water levels continue to rise. A shelter has been established at McGee Park for those displaced by the flooding.
The flooding threat extends beyond New Mexico. In neighboring Archuleta County, Colorado, officials have issued evacuation warnings for residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas near the San Juan, Rio Blanco, Navajo, and Piedra rivers as waterways continue to swell.
The evacuations come as heavy rainfall and runoff have pushed river levels higher across parts of the Four Corners region, prompting emergency managers to closely monitor conditions and river forecasts. Authorities have opened shelters and are working to assist residents impacted by the flooding threat.
