Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – A woman who was arrested after her 14-year-old son got a hold of her gun and accidentally shot and wounded his friend is out of jail after a judge ruled she was not a danger to the public.
Leigh Cleveland is facing charges under “Bennie’s Law” for negligently making a firearm accessible to a minor. The state has asked the judge to keep her behind bars until trial, but Second Judicial District Court Judge Lucy Solimon ruled that Cleveland is not a danger to the public.
Police said Cleveland’s teenage son accidentally shot his friend with her gun at her northeast Albuquerque home back in August. She had told police that the gun was inside an office in the home.
