Santa Fe, NM (KKOB) – The state’s Department of Justice making it’s request on Thursday as to what Meta and Facebook should pay in civil penalties after a jury ruled against the company for lying to users for about 11-years about how private personal information was handled in violation of the Unfair Practices Act. The state is asking that the penalty be $35 to 40 billion. If approved by the judge, it would be the largest in the country’s history.
The jury in the case found that the company violated the act 43 million times as well as 26 misleading statements over the 11 years over the use, sale, and safekeeping of the data which was harvested and sold to a political consulting firm and used to create targeted advertising just before the 2016 presidential election. The judge in the case, Francis Mathew told attorneys he would ruled on the penalty by the end of October.
