Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Roswell city officials say a sophisticated scam cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. An internal review found that fraudsters posing as bank employees tricked city staff into providing authentication information, allowing $375,000 to be withdrawn from a city operating account. The scam happened in June and was not discovered until unauthorized transactions appeared the following day. City auditors say the employee involved made a good-faith effort to verify the caller’s identity. Roswell has since adopted additional fraud training and security procedures, while police continue investigating the theft.
