ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Hockey fans heading to Outpost Ice Arena this weekend will be greeted by more than just opening-night excitement. The New Mexico Ice Wolves are unveiling what is being called the largest indoor mural in the state, a massive work of art that celebrates some of New Mexico’s most recognizable landscapes, landmarks and traditions.
The mural, titled “Spirit of New Mexico,” stretches across 4,200 square feet inside the arena and was created by Albuquerque artist Johnpaul Gutierrez. The colorful piece transforms an entire wall into a tribute to the Land of Enchantment, featuring the Sandia Mountains glowing at sunset, the Rio Grande winding through Albuquerque, hot air balloons floating overhead, and nods to landmarks including the Sandia Peak Tramway and Old Town’s San Felipe de Neri Church.
The project has been months in the making. Gutierrez began work in May and spent nearly four months bringing the mural to life, turning a blank arena wall into what team officials hope becomes a year-round destination for visitors.
The unveiling coincides with the Ice Wolves’ 2026-27 season-opening weekend as the team hosts the Odessa Jackalopes on September 11 and 12 at Outpost Ice Arena. Opening-night festivities will include a ceremonial puck drop featuring New Mexico Tourism Department Acting Cabinet Secretary Lancing Adams and Gutierrez himself, along with family-friendly activities throughout the evening.
Team officials say the mural is meant to celebrate community pride and showcase the culture that makes New Mexico unique. With images ranging from Balloon Fiesta icons to the golden cottonwoods lining the Rio Grande, the artwork is designed to give visitors a visual tour of the state without ever leaving the arena.
The Ice Wolves enter their eighth season in the North American Hockey League coming off a second-place finish in the South Division and hope the new centerpiece helps create even more energy inside Outpost Ice Arena.
