ALBUQUERQUE, NM – PNM is encouraging customers to be aware of copper theft as it observes Copper Theft Awareness Month throughout September.
The utility says copper remains a frequent target for thieves because of its resale value and widespread use in electrical systems. Theft can occur at homes, businesses, utility sites and scrap locations, often resulting in damaged equipment, service interruptions and costly repairs.
According to PNM, businesses reported 46 copper theft incidents in 2025. The utility says the cost of repairing damage and replacing stolen copper can reach tens of thousands of dollars, particularly when businesses must temporarily close during repairs.
Officials warn that copper theft can leave electrical equipment in a dangerous condition. In some cases, wiring connected to transformers and meter bases is removed, leading to power fluctuations, arcing or sparking around electrical equipment. Thieves may also leave transformers open after stealing copper.
PNM advises the public not to touch damaged electrical equipment or open transformers and to report suspected copper theft or unsecured utility equipment immediately.
The utility is also encouraging customers to take preventive measures, including installing security lighting, cameras and motion sensors, and participating in neighborhood watch programs.
