MOUNTAINAIR, N.M. — Firefighters remain actively engaged on three wildfires burning in the Manzano Mountains within the Mountainair Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest.
The Whiskey Fire, Blanco Fire, and Cerro Fire continue to draw resources as crews work to contain the blazes and limit their growth.
Whiskey Fire Grows to 60 Acres
The largest of the three fires is the Whiskey Fire, which was reported on Aug. 21 and was caused by lightning.
The fire has grown to 60 acres and is burning in steep, rugged terrain north of Osha Peak and west of the Manzano Crest Trail within the Manzano Mountain Wilderness.
Forest officials say the fire is burning in mixed conifer fuels and is exhibiting moderate to high fire behavior. Because of the terrain and lack of natural barriers, direct suppression efforts remain difficult.
Fire managers say the blaze is expected to continue growing as crews develop a broader suppression strategy.
Blanco Fire at 21 Acres, 25% Contained
The Blanco Fire, reported on Aug. 24 southwest of Fourth of July Canyon, is estimated at 21 acres and is 25% contained.
Firefighters have completed handlines around the entire fire perimeter and are continuing mop-up operations, securing containment lines and extinguishing hot spots.
The cause of the Blanco Fire remains under investigation.
Cerro Fire Holding at 7 Acres
The Cerro Fire, also reported on Aug. 24 and caused by lightning, remains at 7 acres and is 25% contained.
Crews continue securing containment lines and conducting mop-up operations to prevent flare-ups and further spread.
Closures Remain in Effect
Forest officials have closure orders in place for affected National Forest System lands surrounding all three fires. Public access to portions of the area, including nearby roads and trails, remains restricted to support firefighting operations and protect public safety.
Officials are also reminding the public that drones are prohibited near wildfire operations, noting that unauthorized drone activity can force firefighting aircraft to stop flying.
