LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A judge has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of former New Mexico State University basketball player Deshawndre Washington after he failed to appear in court Monday for the start of his criminal trial.
Washington is facing 15 felony charges related to allegations of hazing and sexual assaults involving members of the NMSU men’s basketball team during the 2022-23 season. He has denied the allegations and previously entered a plea of not guilty.
Jury proceedings were set to begin in Las Cruces, but the trial was halted when Washington did not appear in court. The judge ordered a bench warrant for his arrest, and court proceedings are expected to resume once he is taken into custody.
The delay marks the sixth time the trial has been postponed.
Prosecutors allege Washington played a role in a pattern of hazing involving teammates during the 2022-23 season. Two former players, Kim Aiken Jr. and Doctor Bradley, have already pleaded guilty in connection with the case and are expected to testify during trial proceedings.
The allegations led to significant fallout for New Mexico State University’s basketball program. In February 2023, the university suspended the remainder of the men’s basketball season and later dismissed head coach Greg Heiar.
Washington remains wanted under the bench warrant issued Monday.
