ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —Former University of New Mexico standout Maliek Howell scored the first professional goal of his career Saturday night, helping New Mexico United earn a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Springs Switchbacks at RGCU Field at Isotopes Park.
Howell’s breakthrough moment came in the 51st minute, providing the lone goal in a match that carried significant implications in the Western Conference standings. The goal marked a special milestone for the Albuquerque native, who previously spoke about dreaming of playing for New Mexico United while attending matches as a UNM student.
The win was also powered by another strong defensive performance from United. Goalkeeper Kris Shakes recorded six saves and secured his seventh clean sheet of the 2026 season, while the back line continued its run of strong form.
Following the match, head coach Dennis Sanchez praised his team’s ability to secure a result despite a challenging performance.
“Sometimes it’s not going to be perfect. So what I said to them after was very much: it’s much better to learn and win than learn and lose,” Sanchez said.
Sanchez also credited his players for their commitment throughout the season.
“It’s a credit to the guys. These guys put a lot of time and effort in each day. We talk a lot about our process, and the guys are bought in.”
Meanwhile, Shakes emphasized the importance of the entire team in earning another shutout.
“I’m not too focused on myself. Obviously it’s the whole team, right? Without them it’s impossible for me to get a clean sheet by myself,” Shakes said.
He added that the team remains focused despite its recent success.
“Great teams win games like this, not playing your best and coming out with a result.”
The victory keeps New Mexico United firmly in the race for the top spot in the Western Conference. The club returns to action next Saturday on the road against Monterey Bay FC before returning home August 15 for a matchup against FC Tulsa on Indigenous Peoples Night.
