Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – New Mexico Democrats have officially selected a nominee for lieutenant governor ahead of the November election. The Democratic Party of New Mexico announced that current Land Commissioner Stephanie Garcia Richard won a ranked-choice election conducted by the party’s Democratic Central Committee. After four days of voting, Garcia Richard received 255 votes, or 53%, defeating State Sen. Harold Pope Jr., who received 218 votes, or 46%.
The party was required to choose a new nominee after Maggie Toulouse Oliver withdrew from the lieutenant governor’s race following her victory in the June primary.
Garcia Richard will now become the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor and advance to the November general election.
