SANTA FE, N.M. — More than 11,000 New Mexico veterans have received free lifetime passes to New Mexico State Parks since the program launched on July 1, 2025, state officials announced.
The benefit was created through House Bill 161, signed into law by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in 2025. The program provides eligible veterans with free lifetime access to all 35 New Mexico State Parks, including unlimited day-use entry, camping, and available water and electrical hookups.
The initiative is a joint effort between the New Mexico State Parks Division and the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services (NMDVS). NMDVS issues the passes, which are honored at state parks across New Mexico.
State Parks Division Director Toby Velásquez said the program has exceeded expectations during its first year.
“With thousands of veterans already taking advantage of this benefit, their state parks are providing vital open spaces for recreation and healing, as a tangible ‘thank you’ for their sacrifices,” Velásquez said.
Officials say the two agencies worked together to distribute passes statewide, train frontline staff, and streamline access to park facilities for veterans.
NMDVS Secretary Jamison Herrera said the program remains an important way for New Mexico to recognize military service.
“A year later, the Lifetime Veterans State Parks Pass remains one of the many ways New Mexico honors those who served our country,” Herrera said.
The agencies plan to continue expanding outreach efforts, refining the application process, and evaluating participation as the program enters its second year.
Eligible veterans can apply for a Lifetime State Park Pass through the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services.
