Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – Monsoon season is approaching and the National Weather Service in Albuquerque wants New Mexican’s to be weather aware during the upcoming storm season. Monsoon Awareness Week is happening now through this Saturday with the National Weather Service offering daily topics across social media and online platforms that include topics such as extreme heat, flash flooding, lightening and more. The theme of the campaign is “Respect the Storm: Ready Set Monsoon. The North American Monsoon, which is what New Mexico experiences, is not one particular storm or single rainfall event, but rather it is a collective season that typically spans from mid June to late September in the Southwest U.S. and Mexico.
The season Monsoon season brings much needed rainfall but also dangerous weather hazards. Weather experts are predicting that we could see a stronger monsoon season this year especially during the second half of the summer months due to the forming on a Super El Niño in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Usually during an El Niño year, more moisture and rainfall happens in desert areas such as New Mexico but a Super El Niño means even stronger storms are possible this year in the late summer months such as late July and August. A Super El Niño could trigger heavier, more intense rainfall, severe flash flooding.
Meanwhile there is already a forecast for less Atlantic hurricanes for 2026 as the Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1.
