Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Its been slow-going for construction on the North Domingo Baca Aquatic Center in northeast Albuquerque. Project neighbors have waited more than two decades for the much-anticipated improvements. The North Domingo Baca Aquatic Center was first announced in 2005, with promises to bring a 60-meter indoor competition pool, a diving well, and a separate indoor pool for therapy. Once completed, the center will also be able to seat 800 people to one day host USAA swim competitions, but City Councilor Brooke Bassan said that they’ve struggled to complete the project due to rising construction costs combined with insufficient funding, adding constituents requested changes to the plan, which led to millions more added to the price tag. The project’s total cost is now at $70 million, and Councilor Bassan said that they still need an estimated $36 million to finish.
